Basic Introduction To Voip

VOIP Introduction: What is it and how do you use it?

VOIP is an abbreviation for a technical description that sounds very complex. On the contrary, VOIP technology is quite easy to use for literally anyone and is a new advancement in telephone service.

VOIP stands for “Voice Over Internet Protocol.” Basically, it’s telephone service that uses the internet to send and receive the sound of the call. Financial savings are a great benefit to using VOIP.

How Do You Use VOIP?

To use VOIP technology to make calls, you can do one or more of the following things:

-- Make calls using your standard telephone: With a simple converter called a VOIP adapter (or ATA converter), you can make calls from your existing phone simply by connecting that phone to the VOIP adapter. The other end of the adapter connects to your router or modem. In most scenarios, a VOIP service provider will offer adapters included with their service.

-- Make calls using your computer: Since the VOIP technology uses the internet to make phone calls, you can do so right from your computer! You will simply need a special software program, again usually provided by your VOIP service provider, in order to make calls in this manner. You will also need a headset with a microphone. Although it’s not as convenient to make calls from a computer, it is very easy to do once you have the software installed. (If you work from your home office, this is a nice option to have, especially if you don’t already have a good telephone in your office).

-- Make calls using a VOIP phone: There is also a special VOIP phone which can be used to make VOIP calls. With one of these, you would not need the aforementioned VOIP adapter (ATA converter). Simply plug the VOIP phone directly into your internet connection. However, bear in mind that this type of phone is not compatible with POTS (plain old telephone service) lines, so you will not be able to use this phone if you ever stop subscribing to VOIP telephone service.

Hopefully this VOIP introduction has shown you that VOIP can be a simple, money-saving way to make phone calls. Now that you know the basics, all you have to do is check out different VOIP service providers and find out which one will save you the most money when you switch!
